are elastic compression socks originally created to provide a
level of graduated pressure designed to meet clinical requirements

The results of the first scientific test carried
out to determine the effectiveness of compression socks was published
in May 2001 in the UK's leading medical journal, "The Lancet".
An experiment was carried out using 231 volunteers
before they set off on a long haul flight (in excess of 4 hours).
The volunteers were checked for any signs of blood clots prior
to leaving and then half of the group were given medical compression
socks to wear and the remaining group travelled unaided. It was
found that 10% of the group not wearing any socks developed blood
clots whilst none of those people in
the group that wore socks (compression incidentally was 20 mmHG)
developed any symptoms or clots. It is interesting to note that
no such testing has been done to date on lower compression socks.
